A Caramel Breeze

ZFS on Solaris
Tuesday, June 27, 2006

Solaris 10 6/06 was released yesterday. I'm very keen to try out ZFS, Sun's new file system which changes the whole paradigm of volume management. It sounds similar in some ways to NetApp's WAFL (pdf), where a new block is always written rather than overwriting an old one. The upshot is snapshots - one of NetApp's niftiest features, but Sun have also added the clone.

Solaris is gaining more appeal each day. Seriously thinking of switching to it (at work) as our standard server platform rather than FreeBSD and Linux.
